REC response to the immigration white paper

20-December-2018 - onrec.com

In response to the publication of the Immigration White Paper, Neil Carberry, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said: Posted in News archive on 20 Dec 2018 Company Profile REC View profile » “A white paper on plans for the immigration system is long overdue. Control needs to be matched with ensuring people can come to contribute with ease. Securing the well-established economic benefits of immigration requires moving on from ill-informed targets and sloganeering. “Investors worldwide want to know Britain will be open for business – a safe place to create jobs and base international teams. Firms in the UK want to know that shortages that can’t be filled by local employment and training can be addressed – and not just for higher paid roles. “There are a few pieces of good news today – like a short-term visa for lower-paid roles that can be applied for from the UK, and the acknowledgement that the system needs to be simpler, especially for smaller firms. It was also good to hear the Home Secretary emphasise the importance of the new system working for the flexible labour market. And it was good to see less emphasis on the unworkable net migration target. “But firms will be dismayed by any proposals that require job roles to be on a government-approved list before they can get a visa. Because of this, the way the Resident Labour Market Test is replaced is vital – no list will be able to keep pace with changing demand from employers.” On skills shortages: “Our data shows that candidate availability is declining each month. Recruiters have found it particularly difficult to supply staff in several sectors since well before the referendum, including health and social care, hospitality and food and drink. 42 per cent of employers said they had not been able to find enough workers to fill all their seasonal or temporary vacancies.” On the cost of migration to firms and the need for a simpler system: “The cost of Tier 2 (non-EU workers) visas is already a barrier to mobility and a major cost to employers looking to hire the staff they need to compete and grow. A new system must be radically simplified – we have one of the most expensive visa systems in the world. If a worker were to work for a company for five years with a partner and three children, government fees could cost them or their employer up to £16,069.  SMEs in particular will be hugely impacted if the current system is extended to EU workers.” Ensuring workers are protected: “On top of all of this we mustn’t forget that the increase in complexity and cost to immigration these new rules create increases the risks of poor practice. Making sure visas are linked to individuals not companies – especially for lower paid roles – will help protect migrant workers.”

‘Why is the NPS (Net Promoter Score) not more widespread in our industry?’

20-December-2018 - onrec.com

Paul Thompson, sales director at Voyager Software Posted in News archive on 20 Dec 2018 Company Profile Voyager Software View profile » Quite obviously customer quotes and references reassure nervous prospects that they’re making the right decision, and we do the same here at Voyager Recruitment Software – but we go further. For those not aware, the Net Promoter Score is a management tool that can be used to gauge the loyalty of a firm's customer relationships. It serves as an alternative to traditional customer satisfaction research and is much more honest. It’s often correlated with revenue growth and so some feel it’s a sign of a company’s health. I believe a Net Promoter Score should be high on the list of things a new customer asks about, but sadly it’s typically not. Four years ago, we started using NPS (Net Promoter Scores) to measure the performance of our Support department. Tracking our NPS has been transformational to our business and service levels. Whilst we initially adopted it as an internal tool, spotting customer support trends and training issues more recently we’ve been able to model our product and service moving forward. Software suppliers don’t share unhappy customer stories, but why not? We all know that not all customers can be 100% happy all the time, but with the average support department getting just 28 points, Voyager’s Support departments score is 60 – over double the industry standard. Our staff are doing a great job, they know it and we know it and ultimately that means we’re all winners. Year on year our NPS score has gone up, and it’s down to the honest feedback from happy customers, and the less happy ones. I know of no other Recruitment Software supplier using or publishing their NPS scores – and it makes me wonder, what are they hiding? Well, it’s all the unhappy ones. Written by Paul Thompson, sales director at Voyager Software. Paul.Thompson@VoyagerSoftware.com

Brits spend up to 46% of their monthly salary on Christmas celebrations

20-December-2018 - onrec.com

As one in 10 reveal that they spend over £1,000 during the festive season Posted in Statistics and trends on 20 Dec 2018 Company Profile CV-Library.co.uk View profile » While the majority (88.4%) of Brits find Christmas to be an expensive time of year, one in 10 (9.8%) confess to spending over £1,000 during the festive period – equating to 46% of the average professional’s monthly salary*. That’s according to the latest data from CV-Library , the UK’s leading independent job site. The survey of 1,100 UK workers sought to uncover just how much the average professional spends over the Christmas period and where their money goes. When asked what they spend most of their salary on during the festive season, respondents said the following: An overwhelming 91.6% spend their salary on Christmas presents for friends, family and colleagues While over half (58.3%) of professionals fork out their wages on Christmas dinners Four in 10 (44.3%) Brits flash their cash on festive social events , with a further 36.8% stating that their money goes on New Year’s Eve celebrations And finally, 39.8% will put their wages towards travelling to see family Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library , comments: “The festive season can be costly, especially if you’ve filled your social calendar with dinner dates and Christmas parties. That said, with Brits spending as much as half their December pay packet on these festivities, it’s important to take these costs into account. The last thing you want is to start the New Year with the weight of Christmas still tugging on your purse strings.” Despite 50.3% of Brits saying that they start budgeting for Christmas early, it’s clearly an expensive time of year. Almost half (47.8%) of professionals spend anywhere between £200 to £500 and a further one in five (21.6%) spend between £500 and £900. This culminates in a staggering one in 10 (9.8%) spending over £1,000. Biggins concludes: “While it’s understandable that you want to spend time with your loved ones and partake in the usual traditions such as roast dinners and gift-giving, it’s vital that this doesn’t come at a huge expense to you. Instead, remember what is really important at this time of year and be wise with your spending!” *Based on average salary of £33,500 and taking into consideration tax, national insurance and other deductions

Brexit uncertainty means firms can’t invest with confidence

19-December-2018 - onrec.com

New data shows that employers’ confidence in the prospects for the UK economy remained negative for the fifth successive month, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s latest JobsOutlook report. Following last month’s 3 percentage point improvement, confidence levels dropped by a percentage point this month to -12 from -11 in November 2018. Posted in Statistics and trends on 19 Dec 2018 Company Profile REC View profile » The drop back in employers’ confidence in the economy coincides with confidence in making hiring and investment decisions declining by three percentage points, but remaining firmly in positive territory to a net of +13, the lowest level recorded since April 2018. 61 per cent of employers anticipate economic conditions will be more challenging next year than in 2018, up from 51 per cent when the question was asked in December 2017, showing there has been little or no progress by government to reassure employers, with only 3 per cent of respondents saying that economic conditions will be less challenging in 2019. Despite this, 47 per cent of employers expect their business to perform better next year than in 2018 and just 9 per cent think it will perform worse. 44 per cent expect their business to perform as well next year as they did in 2018, indicating employers are making plans to respond to adverse economic conditions. 49 per cent of UK employers who hire permanent staff expressed their concern this quarter over the sufficient availability of candidates for permanent jobs, up from 44 per cent a year earlier, with anticipated shortages of hospitality workers causing most anxiety for employers. Engineering technical, and health social care workers, were the other two professions where employers expect severest skills shortages. These three professions have been causing most concerns for employers over the last three months. 46 per cent of employers intending to hire temporary workers expressed concerns over the sufficient number of agency workers with the necessary skills they require, up from 35 per cent this time last year. More private sector respondents, 51 per cent, than public sector respondents, 14 per cent, expressed concern. Employers are expecting the most severe skills shortages among drivers for the second successive month, followed by industrial and the marketing, media creative sectors. These three sectors have been causing most concern for employers over the last three months. The net balance of employers intending to hire agency staff in the short-term fell by six percentage points from the previous month (November 2018) to a net balance of +13, but significantly higher than in December 2017 when it was a net of +3. The net balance of those intending to hire temporary agency workers in the medium-term, fell by 6 percentage points from the previous month (November 2018) to a net balance of +10, however it is still higher than a year before when it was at +4. Neil Carberry, Recruitment & Employment Confederation chief executive says: “Britain’s jobs market is resilient, but it can’t defy gravity indefinitely. The current uncertainty around Brexit means firms can’t invest with confidence – and that means lower growth and fewer opportunities in future. We must ensure that the concerns flagged in our survey do not lead to a downward trend in our jobs market.” “In times of uncertainty, flexible working arrangements provide a crucial outlet for employers and workers. The government’s workplace reforms announced this week must be implemented effectively in order to maintain this and find the right balance between flexibility and fairness”. “Today’s report also underlines key staff shortage areas in our economy, from healthcare to logistics, and from manufacturing to or our world-leading creative industries. As well as upskilling our workforce, the need for an evidence based immigration strategy has never been more pressing. We hope that the government is listening at this crucial and uncertain time for UK business”. Visit https://www.rec.uk.com/news-and-policy/press-releases to view all REC press releases

Cezanne HR announces smart performance review and time-off calculation features

18-December-2018 - onrec.com

Cezanne HR, the UK HR leader for mid-sized UK and international organisations, today announced the release of new smart features for both its online and mobile platform. Cezanne HR customers now have the capabilities to set up multiple reminders for performance reviews, and to use timesheet data to automatically calculate entitlement to paid time off for casual and irregular workers. Posted in News archive on 18 Dec 2018 Company Profile Cezanne HR Limited View profile » Other enhancements include a new time-saving option for completing timesheets, weekly reminders, and the option to prevent employees entering hours worked on a day where they’ve already booked time off. The Cezanne HR mobile app has also been updated to allow Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) to be booked and approved via Android phones, which will be closely followed by iOS competences. Flexible reminders for performance reviews With performance reviews often taking a backseat in the workplace, Cezanne HR’s platform now gives customers the option to set up multiple reminders that trigger emails to the relevant participant (reviewer or reviewee) when the due date for their part of the process is approaching or has been missed. The performance review reminders are customisable, with different reminders triggered for different performance processes. These notifications also accommodate global requirements and languages. Automatic paid time off calculations for casual workers Whereas calculating time off entitlement for casual or occasional employees can be difficult, Cezanne HR has released a capability that automatically takes the approved hours from timesheets in its Time Module and updates the entitlement to paid time off in the Absence Module using the correct entitlement calculations. If a change is made to the timesheet after approval, users will be warned and given the option to re-sync the data to get the right figure immediately or have the system do it automatically as part of an overnight update process. Speedier timesheet completion When it comes to completing timesheets, Cezanne HR’s updated Absence and Timesheet module simplifies the timesheet process, saving employees valuable time. Employees who work on the same activities for weeks or months at a time now have the option to copy the timesheet contents from one of the previous four weeks, complete with time worked, activities and comments, to simplify the process. Once copied, the employee can update any of the finer details and submit the new timesheet for approval. This considerably reduces the time spent on the process, potentially saving employees 20 minutes of their time. Time Off in Lieu as a mobile app With Cezanne HR’s HTML 5 interface, employees can already request overtime and book TOIL using a tablet or mobile. Building upon this capability, Cezanne HR has extended the mobile app to allow TOIL to be managed in the app. The updated Android version is already available in the Google play store , and will be live in the Apple store shortly. Sue Lingard, Director at Cezanne HR, commented: “2018 has been a busy year for Cezanne HR’s Development and QA teams, with over thirty new features developed, rigorously tested and released during the year, as well as a brand-new module for employee onboarding and task management. Customer feedback is essential to our product releases and updates, and we look forward to continuing to support our customers in 2019.”

Christmas is usually a time for catching up with friends, unwinding with a festive film and overindulging at dinner Posted in Statistics and trends on 18 Dec 2018 52% of British workers will be checking their emails over the Christmas holidays Three in 10 (29%) will check emails on Christmas Day Working over Christmas may lead to stress and lower productivity, says JC Townend of Lee Hecht Harrison Penna Christmas is usually a time for catching up with friends, unwinding with a festive film and overindulging at dinner. However, for over half of Brits the Christmas period also means replying to emails and catching up on work. New research (1) by Lee Hecht Harrison Penna , the global human capital consultancy, reveals 52% of workers will be checking their emails over Christmas. Furthermore, three in 10 (29%) say they will be checking emails on Christmas Day itself. The majority of British workers cite negative reasons for why they clock in on over Christmas. Almost a quarter (23%) said they want to lessen their workload upon their return in January and almost the same percentage (22%) said they have work they need to finish. However, on a positive note one in five (20%) said they love their job and enjoy staying in the loop. On average, those checking emails will spend one hour and 14 minutes in their inbox. However, it appears Mancunians are most eager to keep on top of work as they spend two hours and six minutes, almost an hour longer than the national average. Top five cities spending the longest checking emails over Christmas City Total time employees plan to spend checking emails over Christmas Manchester 2 hours and 6 minutes Edinburgh 1 hour and 35 minutes Newcastle 1 hour and 31 minutes London 1 hour and 20 minutes Leeds 1 hour and 14 minutes By contrast women seem more prepared than men to put their foot down when it comes to banning work from turning up uninvited to their festive fun, with 38% of women saying they won’t be checking their work inbox at all compared to 31% of men surveyed.  JC Townend, CEO of UK and Ireland at Lee Hecht Harrison Penna, commented: “The Christmas holidays should be a time for rest and relaxation, so it is concerning that many workers will be logging into their emails over Christmas. Leaders should ensure their employees understand the importance of logging off mentally as well as physically. Excessive working means employees risk burn out, stress and exhaustion and won’t return to work in January feeling energised. “Not only does this have a detrimental impact on workers themselves, but it affects the business on a wider level. Even for those who love their job, overworking means they won’t produce high quality work, come up with new ideas and approach their role with a fresh perspective. Before Brits head off on the Christmas break, leaders should remind them it is time for them to relax, unwind and come back to work in January feeling refreshed.” Lee Hecht Harrison Penna offers these tips to workers to help leave work at work: Take a long-term perspective on your to do list - Work out which actions will make the biggest impact on getting 2019 off to the right start and prioritise those. Create a cut off – Be realistic about what you can achieve in 2018. Working at maximum capacity until the final hour is likely to mean you won’t be delivering at you prime so don’t be afraid to schedule some deadlines in January. Make sure you're covered – Planning in advance with your team/colleagues to have a rota system for monitoring incoming requests over the holiday period and an emergency contact list means that no one will be left holding the fort and feeling the pull of their inbox.  Start your stop clock - If you absolutely cannot resist checking in, allow yourself a time slot and stick to it. Taking stock – If you can’t stop yourself from thinking about the office over Christmas use the opportunity to be mindful wisely. Take the time to reflect on your career big picture of 2018 and consider how to reframe it for greater success in the year ahead. (1) The research was conducted by Opinium 20 th – 22 nd November 2018 among 2,007 UK adults

Admiral Recruitment wins Asian Apprenticeship Award 2018

18-December-2018 - onrec.com

Posted in News archive London-based Admiral Recruitment, specialist recruiter to the hospitality sector, has won the Finance, Legal & Professional Services Employer category of the Asian Apprenticeship Awards 2018 for its support of apprentices in the workplace. on 18 Dec 2018 The awards recognise and celebrate the superb level of talent within the British Asian community and the support they receive from their employers and learning providers. The winners were announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 29 th November at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.   Paula Rogers, founder of Admiral Recruitment, said: “Last year, one of our apprentices, Mehreen Ayub, was honoured at the same awards programme so we are incredibly proud to receive this award as it is a direct reflection of our values. “Often a first port of call in the recruitment process, we are very aware of how important it is to highlight to our clients the benefits of what a more diverse workforce brings.   “Regardless of gender, age, nationality or background, what is vital is that we encourage confidence, diversity and more inclusion in the workplace. This can mean, for example,  introducing clients to candidates who have come up through the ranks via an apprenticeship rather than an academic route or indeed, a variety of other routes. We have seen first-hand the enormous benefits this brings to our business. “Diversity is about open mindedness and acceptance of everyone and supporting them to fulfil their passion and potential in life.” For over 23 years Admiral Recruitment has carved a reputation within the hospitality sector as the ‘go to’ consultancy for hospitality professionals, with over 100,000 candidates on its live database. Placements range from senior directorship roles to bespoke senior chefs, front of house and all roles within operations, from interim management and chefs to events, waiters/bar staff, baristas and food service assistants. 55% of Admiral Recruitment’s internal employees are from minority backgrounds. The company’s gender balance is Male 44%/Female 56%, and 6% of team is under 20 years of age and 24% are over 40, showing that there is no age or gender barriers for people. When it comes to candidates, 35% on its current database are British, 45% are European, and 20% are non-European. Paula Rogers said: “Good practice has to start from within. If we are not practising it and engaging in it fully ourselves, we can hardly then go out to market with what we believe is really important. “Diversity brings a strong culturally diverse workforce of motivated people with different life experiences, outlooks and ideas. We feel very honoured that we have been honoured in this way by the Asian Apprenticeship Awards 2018.”

UK remains cheap for overseas business ahead of Brexit

18-December-2018 - onrec.com

Global mobility expert, ECA International (ECA) has revealed that London is now one of the cheapest major cities in Europe for overseas workers since the Brexit referendum, currently ranking 127th in its Cost of Living report. Posted in News archive on 18 Dec 2018 UK has dropped 81 places in the Cost of Living ranking since the Brexit referendum Weakened GBP post-referendum makes UK one of cheapest countries in Europe for international employees and travellers Australia and New Zealand now more affordable for British expats 24 European cities drop in cost of living ranking, due in part to strong US dollar (USD) and weakened euro Global mobility expert, ECA International (ECA) has revealed that London is now one of the cheapest major cities in Europe for overseas workers since the Brexit referendum, currently ranking 127 th in its Cost of Living report. As a result of the weakened GBP since the Brexit referendum, the cost of living in UK cities* is far lower than many in Europe such as in France, Germany and Belgium. Those coming in from the US will also find the cost of living much cheaper in the UK thanks to the strength of the US dollar in comparison to the post-referendum pound. Brexit effect on UK cost of living Steven Kilfedder, Production Manager for ECA International, said: “The cost of living in the UK has dropped significantly for overseas workers and visitors since the referendum along with the value of the pound. With the UK’s leave date fast approaching, all that can be certain is there will be more fluctuation in inflation and exchange rates as the nature of future relationships becomes clearer.” The UK has dropped 81 places since the Brexit referendum according to ECA’s Cost of Living report which compares a basket of like-for-like consumer goods such as groceries, meats and vegetables, and essential household goods. ECA’s Cost of Living report analyses a basket of goods and services commonly purchased by international assignees in 479 locations worldwide. The survey allows businesses to ensure that their employees’ spending power is maintained when they are sent on international assignments. ECA International has been conducting research into cost of living for over 45 years. “Just last week the GB pound dropped to a 20-month low then rose again by the end of the week thanks to political turmoil, demonstrating the economic rollercoaster that the UK is facing right now. Fluctuating exchange rates can have a huge impact on the cost of living for international assignees depending on how they are paid. Companies should have plans in place for countries going through a turbulent period to ensure their staff are not affected. Until a Brexit deal is made, we will not have a clear idea on what this will mean for the UK’s cost of living ranking against other major financial hubs,” continued Kilfedder. US overtakes many European cities in the cost of living rankings 24 European cities have dropped in the cost of living rankings, partly due to the strength of the USD against the weakened Euro. European countries that have maintained their position at the top include Switzerland (four of the top five most expensive cities in the world), Norway (Oslo 9 th , Stavanger 10 th ) and Denmark (Copenhagen 16 th ). Kilfedder explained: “The euro has weakened recently as the EU faces slow levels of growth, the phasing out of quantitative easing, as well as challenges from Italy on the budget rules for 2019. However, the booming US economy and rising interest rates has caused every US city in the report to jump up the rankings, meaning many European cities have been pushed down in comparison. This is good news for those travelling from the US, but many Europeans relocating to the States will find it more costly.” Four US cities have re-entered the Top 100 most expensive in the world, bringing it up to 17 cities in total. Miami, New Jersey, Baltimore and St Louis have jumped by 26 places on average. The cost of living in countries pegged to the USD, such as Hong Kong and some Middle Eastern countries, has also increased due to the strength of the USD. Australia and New Zealand more affordable for British expats The cost of living for overseas workers in Australia and New Zealand has plummeted since 2017, with every Australasian location included in the survey dropping at least 20 places. Although cities in these countries are still more expensive than in the UK, the cost of living gap has narrowed in the past year. Sydney and Canberra both fell out of the top 50 and now sit in 70th and 85th respectively, whilst Adelaide was the city to fall the most places – going from the 64th most expensive location to 111th in the space of a year. According to ECA’s report, petrol is an example of an item that is much cheaper in Sydney compared to London, costing 46p less per litre (96p compared to £1.42). Kilfedder explained “Both the Australian and New Zealand dollar experienced difficulties over the past year and were outperformed by a number of other regional and global currencies. This is good news for UK residents living and working in these two nations however, as they have become much less expensive overall.” The UAE leads a rise in the rankings for Middle Eastern countries The cost of living in the majority of cities in the Middle East has increased, with the exception of Tehran in Iran. Manama in Bahrain has also re-entered to top 100, while Dubai, once considered a highly affordable business haven for UK workers has entered the top 50 for the first time**. “The introduction of a five percent VAT in the UAE has pushed up the average price of goods and services in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This, combined with the fact that its currency is pegged to the US dollar which has been strong in the last year has caused the cost of living for many overseas workers to jump. In the past five years these UAE cities have jumped by 125 and 128 places in the rankings, with Dubai now in 49 th place and Abu Dhabi at 54 th ,” explained Kilfedder. Swiss cities make up four of the top five most expensive in the world Geneva (2 nd ), Zurich (3 rd ), Basel (4 th ) and Bern (5 th ) all continue to demonstrate that Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world, with the four Swiss cities maintaining a steady record of being within the top ten most expensive in the world for the past five years. A cup of coffee in Geneva for example costs £4.73, over £2 more than in central London (£2.71). Kilfedder explained, “The four Swiss cities in our rankings have been among the top ten most expensive in the world for years despite very low or negative inflation for much of the time. A strong currency and particularly high prices for food are among the reasons why the country is so expensive for foreigners. However, despite the high prices, high salaries in the country mean locals are still well-off compared to their European counterparts.”

CIPD welcomes new workplace reforms announced today by the Government

17-December-2018 - onrec.com

Responding to the workplace reforms announced by government, Peter Cheese, chief executive of the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, comments: Posted in News archive on 17 Dec 2018 Company Profile CIPD View profile » “We welcome this ambitious range of workplace reforms. Work can and should be a force for good and these measures will give atypical workers, such as temporary staff and people on zero hours contracts, more rights while recognising the value of such ‘non-standard’ employment contracts to both workers and employers.    “We particularly welcome the extension of the right to a clear and comprehensive day-one written statement of rights to all workers and the move to bring forward plans to create a new single labour market enforcement body.  “We also strongly back the increased remit of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to ensure “quality of work” and the intention to create clear metrics to measure the quality of work in the UK labour market. The UK’s labour market is nearly at full employment, we need to ensure that those jobs are quality jobs, providing workers with the appropriate pay and protections as well as development opportunities so people can progress at work.    “It’s positive to see that the Government has recognised that the gig economy and zero hours contracts can provide the flexibility that many workers and organisations need. These alternative ways of working can, if managed appropriately, help people into work and continue to work in a way that fits their lifestyle. In the changing world of work, and in a post-Brexit environment, it’s essential that businesses can work in a way that is flexible to market demands and the changing needs of individuals.    “While the new reforms will go some way to improving employment rights for people on atypical working arrangements, simply changing regulation will not be a silver bullet for improving job quality more broadly. Businesses must also take responsibility for improving the quality of work by investing in how they manage and develop people, for example by boosting training, improving job design and creating more flexible working opportunities, to ensure that all workers have the opportunity to reach their potential at work. In addition, the Government must ensure its industrial strategy has an enhanced focus on improving job quality across the economy which sets out the actions it will take to nudge, encourage and support particularly smaller employers, to improve how they manage and develop people.”

Standards in Recruitment confirmed as an Approved Accreditation Body by NPS Wales

17-December-2018 - onrec.com

As the deadline for teacher recruitment agencies to apply to the National Procurement Service (NPS) nears, Standards in Recruitment has been confirmed as an approved accreditation body for the temporary workers and supply teachers framework in Wales. Posted in News archive on 17 Dec 2018 Company Profile Standards in Recruitment View profile » Commenting on this, John Randall, engagement director for SiR said “This is good news for the sector and follows the recognition of our teacher agency standards by the Crown Commercial Services (England) (CCS), earlier this year. As a fully independent accreditation SiR has been accepted as suitable, breaking the traditional prerequisite for an agency to be a member of a trade association, so also saving cost.” SiR was launched in 2015 in order to meet the growing needs of hirer governance and supplier compliance in the recruitment industry through independent verification, and is available to all recruitment businesses operating in any sector. The process to accreditation includes a programme to help agencies improve where necessary, this in turn helping their business. Randall concluded “In addition to NPS Wales and CCS England, SiR’s standards are also approved by the National Association of Head Teachers and are recognised by TEAM, the UK’s largest network of independently owned recruitment and employment agents, and the Association of Recruitment Consultancies. Our bank of accredited agencies is constantly growing as compliance validation becomes an ever more important ingredient to an agency’s list of credentials. SiR’s accreditation process is designed to add value to business from the top down.” For further information please call 0845 4504415, email info@standardsinrecruitment.com or visit www.standardsinrecruitment.com/sir-education

A pay rise for those pulling the pints this Christmas

14-December-2018 - onrec.com

Hospitality Catering industry shows high salary growth with 4.4% y-o-y increase Posted in Statistics and trends on 14 Dec 2018 Company Profile Adzuna View profile » Advertised salaries have finally stopped falling, ending their continuous slide since April, and just in time for Christmas Vacancies have continued to fall, now sitting at 1,117,683 - a 0.4% month-on-month decrease, as Brexit nerves continue to impact hiring The latest monthly report from job search engine Adzuna.co.uk reveals that the Hospitality Catering industry has seen some of the highest levels of salary growth across the UK with 4.4% year-on-year increase. A payrise for those pulling the pints this Christmas is no doubt a welcome gift – considering the industry’s role in aiding merriment this festive period. Combined with an ONS report which shows the number of pub jobs is growing this should give people in the service industry a positive outlook heading into the bustling season. In the same vain, the Teaching, Creative & Design, Admin, and Legal industries have seen some of the highest annual rises in salaries year-on-year. In contrast, Science and Quality Assurance jobs fight it out with Domestic and Cleaning jobs for biggest salary decreases, with each industry seeing a -3.9% and -7.2% decline in salaries year-on-year respectively. Looking more generally, for the first time in six months the UK has seen a rise in advertised salaries. Coming just in time for Christmas, the slow slide has finally been halted, with average advertised vacancies seeing a miniscule £9 salary rise. Table 1: Total advertised vacancies and salaries   October 2018 September 2018 Monthly Change Annual change from November 2017 UK Vacancies 1,117,683 1,121,754 -0.4% -2.6% Jobseekers per Vacancy 0.32 0.34 -6.3% -22.0% Av. Advertised UK Salary £33,424 £33,415 0.0% +3.9% After several months of declining numbers of vacancies this is now levelling out in the run-up to Christmas. The report details that whilst Brexit continues to impact nerves around hiring the 0.4% month-on-month decline in October has slowed from 1.4% in September, and is a slight improvement on the year-on-year difference: with it rising from -3.6% in September to -2.6% in October. Elsewhere, Wales is the only region in the report’s measurement to have seen a small decrease in advertised salaries over the past 12 months. This is in contrasting fortunes to neighbouring South West England, which is among the pack leaders, sledging ahead with 8.9% year-on-year salary increases. Northern Ireland meanwhile sees double digit growth. Andrew Hunter, co-founder of job search engine Adzuna, commented: “It’s pleasing to see tireless bar staff and waitresses receiving a jolly bump to their wages, just in time for the busy period. Hopefully this will be some consolation for all the terrible festive jokes and loud behaviour acted out at Christmas work dos up and down the country over the next few weeks. “Looking more generally it’s hopeful that real wages are on the way back up after months of decline. Whilst overall salaries are up 3.9% year-on-year, we had expected to see more robust growth, but have our fingers crossed that this will be a springboard to build upon as we move into 2019.”

Oleeo Provides All Wales’ Police Recruitment Platform

14-December-2018 - onrec.com

Oleeo, the leading global provider of e-Recruitment software, has been announced as the provider of applicant tracking systems to all four police forces across Wales, as part of the All Wales Human Resources and Learning Development Services Collaboration Project. Posted in News archive on 14 Dec 2018 Company Profile Oleeo View profile » Using Oleeo software, the four forces will now run all police officer recruitment on one system. It has been configured by representatives from each police force, will process thousands of applications and for the first time ensure a consistent, fast and streamlined application experience for recruiters and candidates alike. The new system has made the recruitment process significantly more efficient by creating an online application and assessments which can be completed at the applicant’s own pace. Previously applicants would have to rely on the police force contact to complete this process.  This was a large project involving multiple stakeholders, including the resourcing and IT teams from all four forces, sign-off from the Chief Constables of each force, higher education institutions, the Oleeo team, external assessment and bodies such as the College of Policing, SHL and PSI-online. The system also had to be able to cope with the internal differences between forces, and be capable of balancing the needs of both small and big forces, as well as the Welsh Language Act and a new behavioural style sift. Since going live on 24 July 2018, the forces have realised many benefits, including: Team collaboration on ensuring the software helps deliver a focus of improving recruitment across Wales. All staff have an opportunity to support and learn from each other and all made to feel they are part of the solution Information is held on the system in one location as opposed to four and can generate instant data/statistics for analytical purposes. This was previously not available Automation has reduced the need for multiple stages, paperwork and double keying, meaning there is improved efficiency and a better experience for the customer. There are long term cost savings and the time taken to reach assessment level has gone from eight weeks to as little as just two hours. All Wales has one e-platform capable of adapting to multiple ways of use – no matter if being used by one force, two forces, three forces or as an all force model. The system and project have built positive relationships across the four Welsh forces and provided a physical product outcome to All Wales Collaboration for the first time. Improved benefits around Welsh language monitoring, equality monitoring and support An overall consistent and standardised approach to recruitment across Wales’ police forces. All Wales Deputy Chief Constable Bob Evans said: “This has been an innovative step by the four Welsh forces in Wales and a great success. While the forces have saved considerable time in administration we would hope that the candidates feel more supported and find the process is geared considerably more to their needs than was the case before. It gives candidates real control over their application and the flexibility to be completed when it suits them. “The four forces have fully recognised the need to work together and despite challenges of integrating existing systems, barriers and hurdles have been quickly overcome by the desire to get this project up and running within three and half months. This shows us what can be done when we share efforts and best practice across four forces”. Charles Hipps, CEO at Oleeo, added: “We are delighted to support the All Wales project with intelligent talent acquisition software that will help make police recruitment much more seamless across Wales. Policing is such a vital part of any community and it is essential that forces can identify and recruit the best talent to be on the beat as fast as possible. Our intelligent automation is an asset to doing this and we are excited to see early transformation, which will continue to evolve over time in this country.” Commended by the Association of Chief Police Officers, Oleeo for Police Recruitment is used by over 60% of forces across England and Wales. It is the only solution available to use national application forms and make them configurable to the needs of regional recruitment teams to help ensure forces recruit to reflect the communities they serve.

Business leader opinion: Miracle on Downing Street as May fights another day

14-December-2018 - onrec.com

By Jo Sellick, managing director, Sellick Partnership Posted in News archive on 14 Dec 2018 Theresa May has had a nightmare week, but miraculously the Prime Minister remains in power after surviving the confidence vote, and for that the nation must be thankful. Our business leaders desperately needed some certainty as we head into Christmas and prepare for a difficult 2019. While I might not be May’s biggest fan, she was tasked with an impossible job and I do not believe that any other Conservative politician would have negotiated a better outcome at this stage. I can only assume that the MPs who voted against Theresa May and called the vote in the first place were doing so for personal gain and not for the good of the country, as I cannot see any positive outcome of a leadership contest during such challenging times. May already cancelled important meetings with EU leaders this week as a result of the vote, and now that she has won the party’s confidence she must get back to work and renegotiate the withdrawal bill. Of course, there is another possible outcome that became apparent this week, as the European Court of Justice ruled that the UK could legally cancel Brexit. This has brought a rare ray of hope to those of us who are hoping for anything but a no-deal or hard Brexit. A second referendum remains a prospect, and would be my preferred option to finally put an end to this saga. The public now have a clear idea on what they are voting for and it is only fair — and democratic — that British citizens have a say now that the facts and figures are available. Interestingly, opinion polls claim that some of the towns that had the heaviest proportion of leave votes in the country have swung the other way. Any other candidate for Conservative leadership would have made this outcome impossible to imagine. The likes of Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, who campaigned so hard for the pro-leave camp, would have pushed for a hard Brexit or a no-deal Brexit and both of these scenarios would be disastrous for the economy. There is not much to be thankful for regarding politics at the moment, but avoiding a leadership contest at this troublesome time should be a relief to us all. From a recruitment perspective, it would not surprise me if yet more EU workers currently residing in the UK decided to return to their home nations in the new year, where the economy is more certain and job prospects are brighter. This will leave many sectors struggling, not just the NHS as we have already seen, but industries such as care, construction, agriculture and hospitality. The only way to avoid this is for a concrete plan to be set out that business leaders can actually work towards, rather than a selection of vague scenarios and political chaos. Of course, the issue of the Northern Irish backstop still remains and May has a task on her hands trying to resolve this in a way that gets her bill passed in parliament. Time is ticking and there is a legal deadline of 21, January 2019 to get approval on the withdrawal agreement. Now that the confidence vote is out of the way I would hope that MPs get behind the Prime Minister and work towards the same goal. It is a case of better the devil you know, and May is the only bit of stability in the choppy Brexit waters.

The Christmas party is falling out of favour with employees

14-December-2018 - onrec.com

THE ANNUAL Christmas party has been a time-served tradition for companies all over the UK for many years now, but new research has revealed this annual occasion is falling out of favour with employees. Posted in News archive on 14 Dec 2018 More than 1 in 4 don’t enjoy the annual Christmas party Not wanting to socialise with colleagues or Christmas parties being too cliquey were the main reasons for this A meal out with workers’ immediate teams was the most popular alternative THE ANNUAL Christmas party has been a time-served tradition for companies all over the UK for many years now, but new research has revealed this annual occasion is falling out of favour with employees. Perkbox , the UK’s fastest growing employee benefits platform, polled 1,000 UK workers in The Most Generous Time of the Year study and found that more than 1 in 4 (29%) don’t actually enjoy their work Christmas party. Interestingly, the top three reasons why are all down to the social element of this annual event. More than 1 in 3 (34%) report they don’t enjoy socialising with their colleagues at the Christmas party. For some, the social element can be intimidating, as a similar number (30%) said they find Christmas parties too cliquey. While more than 1 in 4 (27%) of those who said they aren’t keen on work Christmas parties said it was because they don’t believe in fun being forced on the company by management. Interestingly for bosses, when workers were asked what they would prefer to do instead of a Christmas party if they had the choice, activities within closer-knit groups proved popular – more than 1 in 5 (23%) saying they would like a meal with their immediate team. This was followed by 7% who would like to do a daytime activity with their team. The same number said they would prefer a night out with their direct colleagues rather than attending a Christmas party with the whole company. In fact, all age groups said they would prefer a meal out with their direct team as an alternative to the Christmas party. Chieu Cao, CMO & Co-Founder at Perkbox , said: “The Christmas party is something that many employers rely on to commemorate the festive season and use to reward staff for their hard work. However, the data shows that actually this Christmas perk is creeping out of favour amongst some sections of the workforce. It is telling that this mostly seems to be due to the social aspect – either because they don’t want to be forced to socialise with colleagues, or because they find this kind of situation where often people will break into groups too cliquey. Cao continues: “It’s not all bad though, as the research clearly shows that there is still an appetite to have some kind of get-together with colleagues before Christmas. In fact, the majority said they would favour a meal out with their immediate team instead of a Christmas party – suggesting smaller group activities could prove more popular. Given that rewards and incentives tend to be most effective when tailored to individuals, businesses looking to swap out the Christmas party for this kind of alternative could even give departments or teams a budget and allow them to choose what they want to do. “But whatever businesses choose to do to mark Christmas this year, it is best organised as part of a year-long reward strategy that will help maintain good morale, staff retention and a sense of team.” To review what employee benefits staff really want at Christmas, check out Perkbox's  Most Generous Time of the Year Study .  Perkbox works to help companies increase motivation and engagement among employees, making businesses more inspirational place to work. The online platform provides access for employees to snap up incentives and rewards, earned through their workplace. Christmas is ´cancelled´ ... and we have Brexit to thank

13-December-2018 - onrec.com

New research from the UK’s largest hospitality job board Caterer.com has revealed more than half (57%) of pub, bar, hotel and restaurant groups are already starting to feel the knock-on effects of the Brexit vote. Posted in News archive on 13 Dec 2018 Christmas crisis in the UK with party season at risk of being less than festive More than half (57%) of the hospitality industry are already feeling early onset Brexit effects Nearly two thirds (64%) of hospitality businesses say Brexit will affect the festive season with increased costs, scaled down parties and cancellations The festive season may be in jeopardy as the Brexit vote becomes the Christmas ‘Grinch’, with the hospitality industry already feeling the pinch. New research from the UK’s largest hospitality job board Caterer.com has revealed more than half (57%) of pub, bar, hotel and restaurant groups are already starting to feel the knock-on effects of the Brexit vote. As the industry prepares for its busiest time of the year, party-goers across the nation are being asked to be patient while waiting for a top up on their Christmas fizz, with more than a third (35%) of hospitality businesses admitting they will be short staffed over the holiday period as Brexit takes its toll on experienced EU hospitality staff. Once a key time for seasonal hires, over a quarter (26%) of businesses have been unable to fill Christmas roles due to a lack of available candidates and over one in five (22%) have lost valuable EU staff who have made the decision to leave the UK already following the vote. In addition, higher produce and supplier costs have led 11% of hospitality businesses to reluctantly pass these onto their customers. Neil Pattison, Director at Caterer.com said: “Whilst the UK may still be in limbo, the implications of the impending exit from the EU have already started to impact the hospitality industry, with increased supplier costs, experienced staff leaving, and a lack of available local talent to fill seasonal roles. “With the hospitality industry equating for 7 per cent of UK jobs 1 we currently rely heavily on staff from EU member states. As more staff make the decision to cut loose from the UK early before new visa restrictions are put in place, the Christmas season will be a time when Britons experience first-hand the growing impact of Brexit on the hospitality industry.” 11% of hospitality businesses say they fear they may have to charge more for Christmas parties to account for staff and increased supplier costs, and one in six (16%) have had to stop taking Christmas party bookings due to a lack of staff. It’s not all bad news however, with the hospitality industry continuing to experience increased growth levels. Caterer.com has already seen an increased demand for local hospitality talent where job listings are up 28% this year. Neil added: “We are working closely with the industry to help attract and retain valuable talent in order to meet increased demand. For those who are considering a career move, particularly in the retail sector which has been hit with job losses due to high street closures and online retailers, the hospitality industry offers exciting career prospects. “Many of the customer service skills acquired in other industries are easily transferrable to a role in hospitality, and employers offer on-the-job training that allows you to earn while you learn.” Caterer.com surveyed 100 hospitality businesses across the UK. Data updated as of 12 December 2018. [1] https://www.ukhospitality.org.uk/page/About

REC response to latest December 2018 ONS labour statistics

13-December-2018 - onrec.com

REC – UK jobs market continues to tighten amidst continued Brexit uncertainty Posted in News archive on 13 Dec 2018 Company Profile REC View profile » Today’s labour market statistics published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the number of vacancies at 848,000 for September to November 2018, 10,000 more than the estimate for June to August 2018 and 40,000 more than the estimate for a year earlier. The unemployment rate was 4.1%, virtually unchanged compared with May to July 2018 but lower than the estimate for a year earlier (4.3%). There were 1.38 million unemployed, 20,000 more than for May to July 2018 but 49,000 fewer than for a year earlier. The employment rate (the proportion of people aged from 16 to 64 years who were in work) was estimated at 75.7%, higher than for a year earlier (75.1%) and the joint-highest estimate since comparable estimates began in 1971. There were 32.48 million people in work, 79,000 more than for May to July 2018 and 396,000 more than for a year earlier. The number of people aged from 16 to 64 years not working and not seeking or available to work (economically inactive) was 8.66 million, 95,000 fewer than for May to July 2018 and 195,000 fewer than for a year earlier. Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) director of policy, Tom Hadley commenting on ONS figures: “Recruiters continue to work hard with employers to fill jobs and aid future growth – but with near-record numbers of vacancies in the UK labour market (848,000 for September to November 2018), and candidate availability tight, the challenge of finding the right staff is set to intensify. “These latest figures also don’t reflect the political uncertainties in the last week. Even before the latest turbulence, REC data showed employer confidence in the economy declining month on month – down from net: 6 in July 2018 to net: -11 in November 2018. “Businesses need clarity regarding Brexit and a pragmatic approach to future immigration policy to deal with labour shortages. Employers are looking for reassurances from Government over our future relationship with Europe, but instead they are facing more uncertainty by the day.”

Key findings from the 2018 survey include: Top sources for candidate sourcing - For in-house recruiters, Employee Referrals retain  the top-spot for providing the highest quality of candidates but cannot be relied on to deliver sufficient numbers. Social Media (not including Professional Social Networks) is reported to be an under-performing channel for the majority of recruitment teams. New this year was the addition of sourcing channels Events Careers Fairs and Job Aggregators (sponsored and not sponsored); the latter reported to provide a high quantity of candidates but often at the expense of candidate suitability for the advertised vacancies. For many industries, scarcity of qualified candidates remains the most significant recruitment challenge. Other problems affecting substantial numbers of recruitment functions include: ‘lack of brand awareness’ and ‘lack of recruitment budget’. Top performing corporate careers sites are four times more likely to contain candidate-centric content that can assist the candidate throughout the entire recruitment process. The report identifies the specific types of online content that candidates will find on ‘peak-performing’ sites. Regularly monitoring and measuring sourcing channels is key to improving your return on advertising investment – unfortunately, a third of recruiters either can’t or don’t measure their sources. Bruce Groves, Marketing Director at Eploy, commented on the report launch, “We were delighted to get our biggest ever response to the annual UK Candidate Attraction Survey with almost 900 UK recruiters taking part. We hope in-house recruitment teams across all industries and company sizes will find the full report a useful resource to benchmark their own experiences with their sector peers – and for agencies to see what’s working well for in-house recruiters. We’d like to thank all of the recruiters who took part in the survey and look forward to seeing how candidate sourcing channels, strategies and tactics develop over the next twelve months.” The UK Candidate Attraction Report, now in its third year, shares top recruitment trends and behaviours across the entire talent acquisition landscape.  Click here to download the full 2018 UK Candidate Attraction Report.

14% of Life Sciences professionals to leave UK as Brexit looms

12-December-2018 - onrec.com

14% of life sciences professionals in the UK could be prompted to move overseas if Brexit brings a negative change in economic conditions. This is according to research conducted by staffing firm Kelly Services amongst 1,400 life science workers across seven countries (UK, France, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands) which showed that the all EU survey average was just 5%. Posted in News archive on 12 Dec 2018 Moreover, with non-UK nationals comprising 7% of the UK Life Sciences workforce 1 , it is clear that UK nationals working within the industry would also consider a move abroad if the country faced another economic shock (following the devaluation of Sterling in the run up to the EU Referendum). This should send alarm bells ringing to a UK government which claims to recognise the importance of the Biopharma and the Medical Devices markets, which generated £33.3bn and 17.8bn turnover, respectively, in 2017. Additional figures from the UK and Ireland, published in Kelly’s Talent in Science report, also revealed: The UK Life Sciences workforce is highly mobile: a higher than EU average proportion of workers in the UK have already relocated overseas for work (29% versus 25%) Similarly, in Ireland, 28% (versus the 25% EU average) have already made an overseas move for work. Of those that have never moved countries for work, 69% of Life Sciences workers in the UK and 70% in Ireland would consider doing so.  Life science workers in Ireland would be more heavily influenced by a family decision to relocate than the average across the 7 countries, 32% versus 22% across the 7 EU countries and 19% in the UK. The significant majority of Life Sciences workers are open to new opportunities: just 14% of UK Life Sciences workers, and 10% of their counterparts in Ireland, state that they never consider alternatives. Very few are actively looking for a role, however, some candidates need to be nurtured into considering a move: just 17% of Life Sciences workers in the UK and 13% in Ireland are always looking out for a new opportunity. Setting the willingness to relocate overseas in context of EU labour mobility there were 11m EU-28 movers of working age living in the EU-28 in 2016 of which 9.1m were actively employed or looking for work.  In addition, there were 1.4m cross-border commuters, bringing the total to 10.5m that either physically relocated or commuted across borders to work in that year.  Germany and the UK remained the main destination countries in 2016, hosting almost half of all movers.  Commenting on the sentiments around mobility expressed in the research, Richard Bradley, MD for UK and Ireland at Kelly said: “Our country has long been recognised as a leader in life sciences where many of the top minds from the EU and around the world have sought to make their mark.  Then along came Brexit, a seismic political event that has shaken the industry to its core, creating uncertainty for businesses and workers.  And with the UK one of the lowest when it comes to the average, all-occupation salary at c.£27,000 (c.€30,500) compared to the two highest, €66,523 in Switzerland and €45,708 in Germany – and with negligible adjustments to salary, Kelly evidences, made following the devaluation of Sterling which commenced in the run up to the EU Referendum - it should be of no surprise that 14% of life science professionals in the UK will be looking to relocate if there is a further economic shock from Brexit. “The continuing uncertainty of Brexit along with attractive salaries are two powerful draws.  The UK must do more to ensure it retains the best talent and I would appeal to the Government to make continuing access to the skills required by industries such as Life Sciences central to its Brexit debate at this critical time in our political history.  The wrong decision will have huge negative ramifications for the life science industry and the UK economy overall.” 1. The economic contribution of the UK

Labour market tightens again, says CIPD

12-December-2018 - onrec.com

Commenting in response to the latest labour market statistics from the ONS, Ian Brinkley, acting chief economist at the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, said: Posted in Opinion on 12 Dec 2018 Company Profile CIPD View profile » “While the labour market has seen some growth in employment, and a very slight rise in unemployment, it is getting steadily tighter. This implies that labour and skill shortages will increase and recruitment and retention may become more challenging. However, these pressures stand to significantly increase if the current uncertainty over Brexit deters more migrants from coming to the UK and net migration from the EU continues to fall. “Wage growth has edged up slightly driven by the finance and business service sector. Real earnings have also strengthened. Historically, real wage growth and productivity growth have gone hand in hand, but it remains to be seen if rising real wages will also be reflected in better productivity figures in the months ahead, given the current Brexit crisis. “It’s vital that employers look at how they can invest in skills and adopt the right people management practices to boost productivity in their organisation and the UK overall.”

The UK recruitment industry grew by 11% to £35.7 billion in 2017/18 despite ongoing Brexit uncertainty

12-December-2018 - onrec.com

Recruiters and associated HR services placed over 1.1 million people into permanent jobs in 2017/18, and were responsible for placing more than 1 million agency workers on any given day, according to new data published today by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC). Posted in Statistics and trends on 12 Dec 2018 Company Profile REC View profile » The REC’s annual Recruitment Industry Trends report for 2017/18 showed that the total industry turnover from permanent and temporary/contract placements, and other HR services, reached £35.7 billion, an increase of 11 per cent on last year. £30.85 billion was generated through temporary/contract placement activity, and approximately £4.84 billion through permanent placements. The number of businesses operating in the UK recruitment industry grew by almost 10 per cent in the year to March 2018, totalling 30,430, and the industry employed approximately 115,000 people – enough to fill all the seats and the pitch at Wembley Stadium. Other figures from the 2017/18 report include: Almost two thirds (64 per cent) of temporary assignments were for 12+ weeks, while one in five (20 per cent) were for 6+ months (compared to 61 per cent and 20 per cent respectively in 2016/17) 85 per cent of contract placements were for 12+ weeks, and 45 per cent of contract workers were on assignment for 6+ months (compared to 80 per cent and 44 per cent respectively in 2016/17) The average value of permanent placements from the wider recruitment industry was £4,238 (up by 6.4 per cent on the average in 2016/17) The average annualised turnover of each temporary/contract worker on assignment was £34,976 (up 20 per cent on the average in 2016/17) Recruitment Industry Trends 2017/18 also includes the REC’s forecast for the next three years, which remains positive despite the unknowns in the political landscape. The REC forecasts that the UK’s recruitment industry will grow by 4 per cent in 2018/19, 4.5 per cent in 2019/20 and 5 per cent in 2020/21. Commenting on the report, REC chief executive Neil Carberry said: “It has been an extraordinary year for recruitment and recruiters. Tight labour markets and quickly shifting skills needs have driven the growth of the industry – but only because recruiters have adapted swiftly to changing times. We see this increased value for clients reflected in our monthly survey feedback – recruitment is a key part of the UK’s world-leading professional services sector. We should celebrate an industry which boosts the economy and transforms candidates’ lives every single day. “The path ahead is uncertain – Brexit, immigration reform, tax changes, technology. But this report shows that recruiters can look at that uncertainty and see the opportunities. Whatever the coming months and years bring, recruiters will continue to use their skills and knowledge to boost the UK’s labour market and find people their perfect job.” Simon Adcock, Head of Professional Services for HSBC UK, which supports recruitment businesses of all types and sizes, added: “Despite current uncertainty, the recruitment industry’s focus on quality of service and its enthusiasm for technological innovation has seen it continue to flourish, boosting the wider UK economy. In a world where the way we work is becoming ever more flexible, the role of the recruiter in connecting people to opportunities and employers to people has never been as important. That’s why we remain firmly committed to firms in this vital part of the professional services sector.” Recruitment Industry Trends is available for REC members to download for free from http://www.rec.uk.com/recruitmentindustrytrends

Generation Z Drops Out of Recruitment

12-December-2018 - onrec.com

Almost one-in-five (18%) of Generation Z applicants are dropping out of the recruitment process, even after being offered a job. This is according to a new report developed by Oleeo, the leading provider of e-Recruitment software, in collaboration with MyKindaFuture. Posted in Statistics and trends on 12 Dec 2018 Company Profile Oleeo View profile » Born in 1996 or later, Generation Z are predicted to outnumber the Millennial generation globally by as early as 2019. Whilst Millennials currently make up 40% of the UK workforce, Generation Z are now leaving education to begin their careers and will quickly take over the Millennial workforce population. The report suggests the reason for Generation Z so readily withdrawing from recruitment processes or declining or reneging on job offers is that companies don’t know how to engage with them. Charles Hipps, CEO and Founder, of Oleeo elaborates: “Gen Z demand a different kind of relationship with organisations. In a digital and relationship-centric era they expect to build a personal connection with potential employers in order to decide where to apply, and which offers to accept. With this generation used to using up to six screens at any one time, these relationships need to be developed across multiple platforms. Added to this, Gen Z expect information to be hyper relevant to them. For employers recruiting large numbers of young people, that’s an incredible mix of demands to meet, which is why technology is so important”. William Akerman, Founder & Managing Director of social enterprise MyKindaFuture, which helps connect employers and young people, agrees: “Technology has the ability to streamline the recruitment process for recruiters, whilst increasing engagement for applicants.  It’s a win, win.” MyKindaFuture has worked with the likes of Skanska, Rolls Royce and Civil Service Fast Stream and Early Talent.  “We’re seeing technologies like video interviews, e-tray exercises, and digi-mentoring being used to engage with young people, improve the applicant’s experience and reduce drop-out rates,” continued Akerman In addition to losing almost one in five good young people during the recruitment process, companies also face potential problems from candidates who aren’t offered jobs. According to the report, only 3% of those who apply for a position will receive an offer, and two-thirds of the talent pool are screened out in the first round. This leaves 97% without a job offer and a plethora of social channels to complain on if they feel they have been mistreated. Vanessa Soames, Graduate Recruitment Director at Police Now, a company featured in the report, comments: “In an on demand society, poor processes and communication in the recruitment process can’t be hidden from candidates. If a candidate has an unpleasant experience, it is likely this will be shared online and the experience of one person is brand-damaging for organisations.” Targeting and communicating with this generation is also difficult as more of them are choosing apprenticeships rather than attending university, according to the report. The number of apprenticeships available has increased at all levels but most notably across Levels 6 and 7, with an increase of 50%. Higher Level Apprenticeships have also seen an increase of 35%. Organisations targeting Generation Z candidates therefore need to be smarter at going into schools, colleges as well as onto campuses. The report also shows that the diversity issues which have plagued the recruitment of other generations are still present.  In 2017, 37.1% of Generation Z women were expected to attend university compared with 27.3% of young men.  Yet, according to Oleeo’s figures, 63% of applicants were male and just 37% were female. Equally only 15% of black and Hispanic applicants were successful in being accepted onto graduate schemes, compared to a combine 85% of their white and Asian counterparts. Charles Hipps concludes: “Organisations trying to recruit Generation Z talent have a lot to think about. They have to be adept at reaching out to young people in schools, in universities, while they’re completing apprenticeships or even taking a gap year. They cannot rely on the same old routes and approaches. At the same time, they must give candidates a great recruitment experience from the outset, and at every step of the way, until the young person is onboard and working.  That means engaging with large numbers of very different young people, but every time in a meaningful way.  With HR teams already under considerable resource pressure, technology is inevitably going to be a vital enabler in early years recruiting.” To read the full report on ‘ Why Candidate Experience is Essential to Early Careers Recruitment ’ please click here .

5 Sharp Questions to Ask in Your Next Interview

12-December-2018 - onrec.com

Interviews are as much about you finding out whether you want to work somewhere as it is about your interviewers deciding whether you are the right candidate for the role. Posted in News archive on 12 Dec 2018 After answering their questions you will be in a position where you know what they are looking for, but how about how the company matches up to somewhere you want to work? ‘Any questions from you’ typically signals the end of the interview. But rather than running out of the room as quickly as you can to breathe a sigh of relief that you got through the interview unscathed, using this opportunity to engage with your interviewers further can do wonders for your chance of snagging the job, as well as judging whether this is a place you could see yourself working. Posing insightful questions can really help you stand out from the crowd as well as demonstrating your seriousness about the role. Going into the interview with 2 or 3 prepared questions is always recommended. This is your opportunity to learn more about the role, to show your desire to excel and progress in the role, and also find out about the ethos of the company and what it is like to work there. Here are five questions to help you stand out at your next interview: 1.     How did this vacancy arise? There are many reasons why the position you are interviewing for has become vacant. This may be because of an internal promotion, or because the person filling the role before resigning. Alternatively, if this is a new role, then that is a good indication that the department is thriving and expanding as a result. If the vacancy is due to a promotion then this speaks highly of the company, not only that they are keen to promote, but also that employees are keen to stay. On the other hand, if they have had trouble finding someone to remain in the position for any significant length of time then this should sound alarm bells. 2.     What are the main challenges of this role? All jobs come with their own unique challenges regardless of whether it is an executive or entry-level position. Being forewarned of what you may be up against is always useful. Employers should be happy to give you an honest appraisal of the job and this includes its least desirable elements; an interviewer who brushes over this question or maintains there are no challenging elements may have something to hide. This is your opportunity to consider whether you would be able to overcome these challenges, and if so, demonstrate this capability to the interviewers. 3.     What is the recruitment timeline for this position? This question has a dual purpose. Firstly, asking this shows your interest and keenness in the position and that you are excited about learning the outcome of the interview, but secondly it is also important that you know what lies ahead. The next step in the recruitment process might be a final decision, or alternatively it could mean another two rounds of interviews or a practical examination. Finding out the timeline may also help you gauge how many people they have lined up to interview for the position; if they tell you not to expect a decision for a week or more, it is likely they have a number of candidates to see. 4.     What is it like to work here? It is not just the role you need to be comfortable with, but you also need to be sure you are comfortable with the company itself. It is always advisable to find out about the culture and ethos of the business and how it operates before you accept a role there. Regular out of work events suggests a strong team camaraderie, while the option of flexible working hours implies a company sensitive to ensuring their staff enjoy a healthy work-life balance. 5.     What is the most interesting or memorable project you have been part of while working here? Allowing the interviewer to talk about their experiences working with the company is a great way of understanding more about the projects they handle. Furthermore you can learn a lot about how your interviewer feels about working at the company by considering their excitement and passion behind their answer. If they are enthusiastic about working there, chances are it is an exciting place to be. Siemens to shut Texas turbines service facility, dismiss workers

Helping Your Expat Team Cope With Isolation and Loneliness

07-December-2018 - onrec.com

By Jamie True, Chief Digital Officer, LifeWorks Posted in News archive on 07 Dec 2018 As a manager you know that working in another country is a great opportunity to acquire international business skills, but for expatriates it’s easy to feel lonely, isolated, and homesick. While technology helps people to stay in touch with friends and family back home, it can also, at times, make people feel more alone. Creating a strong social network for foreign workers living in a new location can not only help make the adaptation process easier, but make the whole experience of working in another country more enjoyable for them and drive overall business success. While children usually adapt quickly to a new location, adults often have difficulty, but there are a few measures that can be put in place to help lay the foundations to a new social circle and support system for expats. These may include the following: Social gatherings – picnics, sports teams, or perhaps local expat mentors for newcomers? These can be comfortable first steps for newcomers to start to learn about their new environment. Providing local information, including information about opportunities to get involved in their local expat community, such as: A list of clubs, sports teams and events. No matter what their home country, other expats can provide information and offer support. Professional associations in the new location. These provide opportunities to meet people nearby with similar interests and experiences – and expand professional networks. Suggest they contact their university or college alumni association. Most have branches around the world that hold events. If they are a member of a faith community, you can provide a list of places of worship so they can participate in activities and volunteer their time. They can get involved with their child’s school and get to know other parents through school activities. Are there local teams to play a favourite sport or learn a sport popular in the new location? If they’re musical, you can provide information about a band or choir if available. Similar to the above suggestions, expats who can form friendships with locals from the new location often find cultural mentors to help them adapt to the new culture and even a new language and feel more at home. Some tips for expat staff and families to consider are: Volunteer. Coach sports, teach a class or get involved with a local charity.                              Learn a new skill. Master an activity popular in your new location. Investigate meetups. Many cities have meetups – groups of individuals with shared interests who plan events. They’re often free and are another great way to meet like-minded people. Celebrate both your own traditions and those of your new location. Host get togethers and invite neighbours, business associations (where appropriate), new acquaintances, and fellow expats. Accept invitations from locals (again, when appropriate) to participate in their religious or cultural celebrations.                                  Helping employees deal with loneliness As much as you may want to help another expat employee who is having difficulty adapting, it may not be culturally appropriate. Personal advice may be interpreted as a failing or loss of face and could impact other team members. Seek the advice of cultural experts with your Expatriate Employee Assistance Programme on how to best support the different needs of your team. Your organisation understands the importance of support for expatriates and that’s why they offer the expatriate employee assistance programme for expatriate staff and dependents whether on assignment with the employee or living elsewhere. Don’t hesitate to contact us or suggest this benefit to expat staff. Case study LifeWork’s has worked with Itsu to provide support for its internationally diverse workforce. Around 70 percent of Itsu’s restaurant employees come from outside of the UK, so for many English is not a first language and the company was struggling to establish a sense of community among its workers and a connection back to the organisation’s leadership and brand. Itsu adopted the LifeWorks platform to provide its staff with 24/7/365 clinical and professional support, plus preventative initiatives to support physical, mental and emotional well-being in the form of snackable content, risk assessments and challenges. The implementation also provided a recognition and private social network for rewards and peer-to-peer engagement, enabling employees to communicate directly with each other, share news and stories, celebrate achievements, ask for help, build mini communities and organise social activities.

Service Provider Accreditation (SPA) – rising to the challenge, a win win for everyone

07-December-2018 - onrec.com

Lawspeed is delighted to announce the launch of a new accreditation for umbrella companies and other service providers. To be known as SPA (service provider accreditation) the purpose is to provide an independent certification that recruitment businesses, hirers and candidates can trust. Posted in News archive on 07 Dec 2018 Company Profile Lawspeed Ltd View profile » Adrian Marlowe, MD of Lawspeed explained “Historically the main area of concern for resourcing businesses using service providers to take contractors on to their books was tax risk. Dependent upon the contract arrangements between the umbrella and the candidate, the risk made it important to validate those arrangements in advance. “Today, a whole series of challenges exist across a wide spectrum of employment and data protection legislation. With reputational damage a potential consequence of non-compliance, the risks go well beyond tax liability. Additional factors include risk arising from employment, contract, data protection (GDPR), the Agency Conduct Regulations and Agency Worker Regulations non-compliance. “The extension of the public sector IR35 rules in April 2020 will introduce yet more tax considerations, and inevitably will encourage the use of service providers by contractors. Add to that the fact that some service providers operate groups of businesses using the same trading name, offering different models with different risks, so making it hard for others to ascertain which who or what is being validated, and the whole picture demands better transparency. True independent validation now offered by SPA provides clarity in all these risk areas ruling out the confusion that currently exists. “Lawspeed has offered audit services (earlier SPA audit) in this area for many years, and this new SPA accreditation rises to the challenge for 2019 and onwards. We understand the areas relevant to bolster agency, hirer and candidate confidence in terms of legislative and commercial requirements. To ensure continuity, certification renewal is required every year. As there is no membership or lobbying function, not only is there lower cost payable by the service provider, but any potential conflict of interest, a point historically overlooked, is avoided. No one sensibly expects the same organisation that represents a business to criticise that business’ credentials. “Truly independent validation through SPA is therefore a win win for everyone. Resourcing businesses, hirers and candidates alike obtain the assurance they need, and know who they are dealing with. At the same time the service provider has a flag to fly to the world as to its operational suitability at a fraction of the cost of trade membership and without its pitfalls. “With over 20 years expertise in the sector Lawspeed is the UK’s leading law consultancy dedicated to the recruitment and staffing industry. Our services are underwritten by comprehensive professional insurance, and we are ISO 9001:2015 accredited including for audit services. With a good number of applications already underway, and considerable interest from resourcing businesses and service providers alike, we are building a PSL available for use by all interested in this area.” For more information or to apply for certification call 01273 236236.

When it comes to maintaining the well-being of the workforce, prevention is better than cure. But in order to be effective, well-being efforts need to support the whole person, 100% of the time, in their personal as well as professional life. Paula Allen, Vice President of Research and Integrative Solutions for total well-being solution LifeWorks by Morneau Shepell, said: “Our own research shows that managers are able to tell that someone will transition to disability up to 18 months before they actually take leave. So, there are early warning signs.” Making sure that Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are available is part of the solution, but this needs to be supported culturally in terms of making sure stigma is addressed and a mentally healthy work environment is encouraged. Total well-being consists of four pillars: physical, mental, social and financial, all of which rely heavily on each other for support. While EAP is proven to be effective, it only reaches the 10% of people that reach out in times of need. To support 100% of the workforce, employees need something that speaks to them day-to-day, through the times that are good as well as the times that are bad. “Everyone has different well-being drivers and different requirements,” said Allen. “People are very busy, so we need to break support into smaller pieces to fit into their lifestyle. Technology allows us to drive access to support for people who wouldn’t have otherwise asked for help.” Alastair Macdonald, Senior Vice President of HR at Nestle Canada and special guest at the Total Well-being Keynote, said: “We know that when people go off work for mental health related issues they go off for a long time. So, if we can intervene before a crisis situation, in terms of prevention, intervention, or restoration, it’s money well spent.” Join the world’s first Total Well-being Keynote, hosted by best-selling author and workplace culture expert, Chester Elton, on December 13 at 11am EST.   About LifeWorks by Morneau Shepell LifeWorks is the only unified Total Employee Well-being solution that people everywhere love to use. Do You Know Why Malta Is the Best Place to Work Abroad

06-December-2018 - onrec.com

Before taking the decision to move in a new country, many expats tend to carefully check the pay scales, career prospects and the work culture of that place. Posted in News archive on 06 Dec 2018 Nations that are rated as good places to work in generally attract a higher number of professionals with global degrees and work experience. According to the survey from InterNations, Malta ranked first in overall job satisfaction out of 64 countries. Malta has therefore seen a significant inflow of professional immigrants in the last 5 years or so. The most popular jobs for expats include IT, financial jobs and the gaming sector, followed by the hospitality and tourism sector. Several professionals, who hadn’t even heard about this small island in the past, are now seriously thinking about moving to Malta. Below are some of the reasons why. Career Opportunities Malta may be the EU’s smallest state, but there's no shortage of reasons to visit. Malta is much more than a vacation destination, when it comes to job options only countries like the US and the UK ranked higher than Malta in the survey. Various industries are flourishing on the islands, from financial services to gaming, thus creating jobs for talented individuals from all over the world. People Will Look Out for You The atmosphere in Maltese companies is often very warm and welcoming. Due to the islands’ tiny size everyone is on a first-name basis, and you will never be stranded, alone, or wanting for company. It's really one rock full of love. However, in case you don’t like the job or simply happen to find a better opportunity, your decision to leave the company may be taken more personally than elsewhere. English-Speaking Region Working abroad can be difficult for expats who feel nervous about living in unfamiliar surroundings for an extended period of time. For expats who might not be comfortable in a wholly alien environment, Malta is a wonderful destination. English speaking expats are able to communicate with the locals easily and navigate the island efficiently. The Weather If you love glorious weather, Malta is the island for you! In summers you can enjoy 12 hours of sunshine. Autumn and spring tend to be pleasantly warm. Winters can be cold, but are fortunately short. Cuisine and Night Life Maltese dishes are fresh, seasonal and delicious. If you’re a fan of seafood, you’ll find no fresher fare anywhere in the world. Island is currently going through something of a food revolution – so there's never been a better time for foodies to consider Malta. Speaking of night life – Malta has a thrilling club scene. Fans of live music will love the seaside bars and venues, where some of the world’s most popular live acts can be seen performing. Healthcare According to the survey conducted by World Health Organization (WHO), Malta ranked 5 th worldwide in the field of healthcare. Malta follows some serious high standards in the medical field that why anyone who pays for national insurance is eligible for free public healthcare in the country and this includes expats.

IR35 - Umbrella company v PSC, why you should care?

06-December-2018 - onrec.com

The contractor tax rules known as IR35 are set to change. In simple terms, agencies and hirers that have historically hired contractors without risk of tax liability will, from 5th April 2020, be liable if they get the IR35 rules wrong. It is therefore relevant to understand when the rules apply. Posted in News archive on 06 Dec 2018 Company Profile Lawspeed Ltd View profile » IR35 is known by HMRC as ‘the intermediaries legislation’. An intermediary for the purposes of the rules is a third party that is responsible for paying the worker or providing a benefit to the worker concerned. For example an agency which supplies a company contractor is not an intermediary because the agency does not pay the worker – instead it normally pays the contractor company which is the ‘intermediary’. An ‘intermediary’ can be one of several models the most common being the worker’s own company, often referred to as a personal service company (PSC), and a service provider company, generically referred to as an umbrella company. The legislation only applies to intermediaries in which the worker owns at least 5% of the shareholding, so PSCs fall squarely into category whereas umbrella companies, which are owned by entirely different shareholders, do not. The IR35 rules require assessment of employment status for tax purposes. Under the proposal if status is deemed as employment, namely caught by IR35, the contractor company should be paid net of tax with the payer (usually the hirer or agency) facing an additional ‘employer’ NICs bill. Since IR35 does not apply to payments to umbrella companies, there can be no risk of IR35 tax applying. The use of this model therefore may well become more attractive, making it important to consider both alternative tax ramifications and contractual arrangements. Tax and regulatory compliance of umbrella companies is critical and should be addressed before any contract is entered into with the service provider. The contract itself should take into account the larger operation and different interests that exist, to ensure that all areas of risk are covered off. For example the umbrella company may offer different models of operation, particularly if it is part of a group. It may employ the worker but equally may hire the worker on a non employment contract. It may engage the worker though other companies, it may offer a Swedish derogation model and so on. Remember that an umbrella company is a commercial organisation that benefits the overall shareholders interests not necessarily just the worker’s interests. Contrast this with a PSC set up simply to benefit the worker in terms of the specific contracted work. There are different risks attaching to each. To help identify compliant service providers and umbrella companies Lawspeed has launched a new accreditation service, SPA. Our experience in this sector is considerable and we welcome any enquiries concerning  contracting models, contracts, IR35 and the new SPA service. In summary, the proposed extension of the public sector IR35 rules may well result in many contractors switching from PSCs to umbrella service providers. Understanding the different commercial and tax issues is a precursor to setting up the right contracts, and having correctly tailored contracts in place is always a commercial necessity. For more information or to enquire about SPA please call 01273 236236 or email to info@lawspeed.com quoting “PSC v umbrella”. Author: Theresa Mimnagh, associate director at Lawspeed

Despite Brexit Concerns, More UK Workers Looking to Leave Their Job, According to Gartner

06-December-2018 - onrec.com

The number of UK employees looking to stay in their current job has fallen sharply over the past 12 months, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner’s latest Global Talent Monitor report for 3Q18 shows that 23 per cent of employees indicated a low intent to stay with their current employer, a 13 per cent increase from 3Q17 and 10 per cent higher than the current global average (13 per cent). Posted in News archive on 06 Dec 2018 The ongoing uncertainty around Brexit has had little impact on both workers’ desire for job stability, and businesses’ assessments of their economic prospects. The UK reported the highest business confidence rating of all European countries surveyed at 60, and above the global average of 57. “Business leaders have a lot on their plates, but the data shows that employee retention is a much bigger challenge than perhaps expected,” said Brian Kropp , group vice president of Gartner’s HR practice. “Employers need to think about not just how they are attracting talent, but also how do they keep their best workers.” While fewer UK workers are committed to staying with their current employers, the number of workers who reported a higher willingness to go above and beyond at work remained flat from 2Q18 to 3Q18. While workers are not keen to put in more effort than they are currently, the good news for employers in the UK is that 55.4 per cent of employees reporting high levels of discretionary effort also indicated a high intent to stay. Keeping employees engaged With an increasing number of employees considering moving jobs, employers need to establish strategies to better engage their current workforce while attracting new talent. To do this, organizations need to ensure they are offering and promoting the incentives that appeal most to workers via a robust Employee Value Proposition (EVP). In 3Q18, UK employees ranked work-life balance, job location and stability as their top attributes when considering an employer. “In the past, many companies wrongly assumed that a huge paycheck was what mattered most to workers,” Mr. Kropp said. “While being paid what employees feel is a fair amount for the work they perform is important, organizations must also consider what outside compensation matters most to employees and provide those benefits. Delivering on the whole package can increase how engaged and satisfied employees are in their current roles.” Global Talent Monitor data is drawn from the larger Gartner Global Labor Market Survey that is made up of more than 22,000 employees in 40 countries. The survey is conducted quarterly and is reflective of market conditions during the quarter preceding publication. About Gartner for HR Leaders Gartner for HR Leaders brings together the best, relevant content approaches across Gartner to offer individual decision makers strategic business advice on the mission-critical priorities that cut across the HR function. Evenbreak wins UnLtd award for driving social change

06-December-2018 - onrec.com

Posted in News archive Evenbreak, a pioneer in disability specific recruitment, has secured support from UnLtd, the UK’s foundation for social entrepreneurs on 06 Dec 2018 Company Profile Evenbreak View profile » The funding and tailored support package will help the organisation continue to drive lasting social change at a time when the UK is beginning to wake up to the value of the purple pound. Evenbreak is a multi-award winning and values led social enterprise founded by Jane Hatton in 2011. A strong believer in ‘nothing about us, without us’, Jane created the UK’s first and only jobs board to connect inclusive employers with an untapped pool of talented disabled candidates. Evenbreak’s entire team is disabled, providing unique insight and valuable expertise to both the candidates and employers that they serve. Savvy organisations seeking to address the looming skills shortage, are well aware of the benefits that employing a diverse workforce has to their bottom line. Once an employer commits to employing disabled people, they open the doors to a wider talent pool, a more loyal, engaged and productive workforce and an increase in revenue, profits and market share. However, taking that step can be daunting for some, so Evenbreak also supplies employers with a best practice portal to guide them through their disability confident journey. The portal is packed with resources and advice from disabled people themselves and leading disability employers and clients, such as Channel 4. Jane Hatton, Evenbreak, said: “We know that our specialist job board allows talented disabled candidates find opportunities with inclusive employers who will value their skills. But we can only help the disabled candidates who know we exist! The grant from UnLtd will enable us to reach out to far more disabled people so that they have the opportunity to find jobs with inclusive employers of choice too!” Nas Morley, UnLtd Director of Partnerships Influence, underlined the importance of the expertise and support on offer and said: “Enterprising people are at the heart of so much positive change across the UK, so it’s wonderful for UnLtd to be able to provide support for this social venture. We hope that our tailored package of support will help to develop many more sustainable businesses that will deliver lasting social impact. We’re living in particularly challenging times, so some of these ideas and innovations are urgently needed.” UnLtd is working hard with partners from both the public and private sectors to help deliver social impact by harnessing the huge potential of social entrepreneurs to solve society’s biggest challenges. The organisation is focused on three big impact areas; resilient communities, employability and solutions for an ageing society. Salaries soar by 28.9%, as struggling businesses fight to fill vacancies

06-December-2018 - onrec.com

…That’s after application rates dropped in November Posted in Statistics and trends on 06 Dec 2018 Company Profile CV-Library.co.uk View profile » – Average salaries for new roles reached a 12-month high in November, soaring by a staggering 28.9% across the nation. What’s more, key cities such as Liverpool, Glasgow and Southampton are leading the way when it comes to pay growth. That’s according to the latest job market data from CV-Library , the UK’s leading independent job site. The report, which compared data from November 2018, with the same period in 2017, found that a number of the nation’s key cities also saw impressive hikes in pay last month. The list of cities that saw the biggest increases in advertised salaries includes:  Liverpool – salaries up by 11.9% Glasgow –  salaries up by 11.4% Southampton – salaries up by 11.1% Aberdeen – salaries up by 10% Newcastle – salaries up by 8.1% Birmingham – salaries up by 5.4% Leicester – salaries up by 3.4% London – salaries up by 2.7% Brighton – salaries up by 2.1% Leeds – salaries up by 1.8% Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library , comments on the findings: “This staggering increase in salaries is a direct result of the ongoing struggles that  UK businesses are currently facing. Ongoing economic uncertainty, coupled with the growing skills gap, is making it difficult to entice candidates away from their current positions. As such, it’s clear from the data that organisations in some of the nation’s key cities are pulling out all the stops to secure the top talent.” What’s more, employers are continuing to advertise their job vacancies ahead of the New Year, with the number of live job vacancies increasing by 8.7% in November, when comparing year-on-year data. That said, candidates continue to remain cautious, with application rates dropping by 14.8% over the same period.  Biggins concludes: “The data reveals that candidate confidence has taken a knock since this time last year and this could be the driving force behind last month’s jump in salaries. It is, however, good to see that businesses are still advertising their vacancies. And with many professionals adopting the ‘New Year, new me’ mantra in January, plus the impressive pay packets currently on offer, we expect to see application rates picking back up as we enter 2019.” If you’ve got vacancies to fill, don’t hesitate, post your jobs with CV-Library today.

Creating ‘Knockout’ Customer Experiences: How My Skills as an International Taekwondo Athlete Relate to Enterprise Sales

05-December-2018 - onrec.com

My heart races the second I step into the ring. Posted in Opinion on 05 Dec 2018 Company Profile Bullhorn View profile » My mind fixates on the subject in front of me when the bell rings. My body positions itself against my competitor as we begin to bout. My passion is taekwondo, the Korean martial art characterised by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast-kicking techniques. My love of taekwondo began when I was five years old. My parents enrolled me in a class after my coach, a patron of a local shop that my parents owned, told them that the sport helped with motivation, self-discipline, and general health. An active child, I seldomly wanted to sit still so my parents thought that taekwondo would allow me to channel all my energy. How right they were. Competing since I was six years old and participating in about six competitions each year, I was undefeated until I was 15 years old. I fought at all types of competitions - local, state, and national titles, and each competition had at least two to four fights within them. It was exhausting, exhilarating, and extraordinary. To be the best athlete that I could be, I knew I had to train with the world’s top athletes. At 15 years old, I moved from my hometown of Bundaberg, Queensland, to Melbourne, Victoria, to train with a renowned club, City West Taekwondo, and start competing heavily in tournaments. At 16 years old, I fought at the British Open in Manchester, England, winning bronze and officially ranking me globally for the first time. It was an amazing feat, and one that I’ll never forget. At 18 years old, and after I studied taekwondo in South Korea, I trained with an Olympic coach in Sydney, allowing me to work out with some of the best taekwondo athletes in Australia. Unfortunately, during one of my fights, I dislocated my jaw. After continuing to do so for another 14 times, I couldn’t compete at the level I had been competing. That’s when I started focusing on developing a career in recruitment, first working at an agency in Sydney before joining Bullhorn as an account director - enterprise for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market to manage customer relationships. It’s been remarkable working with some of the biggest enterprise agencies in APAC, and it’s been great continuing to utilise some of the skills that I learned as an international taekwondo athlete (not the actual fighting, of course!). How do my experiences in taekwondo relate to enterprise sales? Let’s kick it: Continuously Prepare for Various Scenarios Before fights, I ensure that I’m mentally prepared for them and anything that might come my way during them. Taekwondo is as much mental as it is physical so I mentally focus on the task at hand. And I don’t want any distractions while I prepare. At one fight, one competitor sat next to me and discussed previous matches, but my coach knew that I needed to be in my zone so he interfered and halted the conversation. Sitting in solitude before fights allows me to devise various strategies in my mind about how I want to approach matches. How should I save my energy for the next fight or two? How should I quickly defeat my competitor? How should I leverage new kicks and at what point in the fight should I use them? This visualisation is liberating, and it’s how I’ve built my game. In enterprise sales, preparation is essential for success. Before pitching prospects, we study their businesses to understand their objectives, operations, and competitors so we’re prepared to have engaging conversations with them. Before meeting with clients, we ensure that our agendas are clearly set with them and work directly with them to iterate on meeting materials so we can have open and honest dialogues with them. Our consultative approach enables us to personally tailor discussions and solutions to match our customers’ business strategies and help them reach their goals. Always Stay Motivated When I was 16 years old, I was selected as one of two Australian athletes to spend three months at Hanzhong University in South Korea, studying taekwondo, which is the country’s national sport. This opportunity meant that I was about to practise with elite athletes who were incredibly motivated to not only fight, but also to represent their country. At the university, we trained eight hours per day, five to six days per week, no matter the weather - rain, snow, hail, sun; there weren’t any excuses. We started our first sessions at 5 a.m. local time and ended our last sessions at 10 p.m. local time. Recognising that this university experience was once in a lifetime, I was driven to succeed and hone my taekwondo skills. Working in enterprise sales, motivation is critical, especially for everyone on our team. Why? Because it means that we’re inspired to collaborate with our prospects and customers. As a global team, we’re agile so we work against all types of priorities and deadlines to complete tasks and make our prospects and customers satisfied. We learn fast so we can ramp up quickly on new accounts or use our expertise to deepen existing relationships. We always operate as a team, delegating up and down to teammates because we’re all focused on shared goals and delivering excellence to our prospects and customers. Needless to say, we’re motivated to make differences for them. Relentlessly Pursue the Best Results When I competed at a selection event in Melbourne for the British Open, I had three fights in one day, which might not seem like a lot, but, physically, it’s quite demanding. My strategy for approaching these fights was to end the first one as quickly as possible, leaving more energy for the remaining two fights. In the second round of the first fight, I threw a left-leg roundhouse kick - a move where I forced my left leg around in a semicircular motion and struck my opponent with the front of my leg - that resulted in my very first knockout. Fast forwarding to the final fight in the same tournament, I defeated a more experienced international fighter, who was also five years older than me, by one point. It marked my quest to relentlessly attain the best results in my athletics. In enterprise sales, we work to achieve the best outcomes for our prospects and customers who are putting the world to work. To accomplish this goal, we rely on our team - comprised of individuals of all experiences, backgrounds, and levels - to create incredible customer experiences. We enable our prospects and customers with technologies and strategies so they can become more productive and efficient in their work, allowing them to grow their existing businesses or establish new operations. It’s tremendously rewarding because at the core of any strong customer relationship is a true partnership. When we work together, we can achieve the best.  Competitive taekwondo has taught me self-discipline, problem-solving, and independence. It has also allowed me to establish new personal relationships with coaches and athletes all over the world. And, of course, it has helped me create knockout experiences for recruitment agencies. Lauren Thom is an account director - enterprise, APAC for Bullhorn , the global leader in CRM and operations software for the recruitment industry.

REC partners with HiBob to address recruitment workplace challenges

04-December-2018 - onrec.com

The Recruitment Employment Confederation (REC), the professional body for the UK recruitment industry, has unveiled people platform HiBob - the transformative HR management tool - as its latest business partner. Posted in News archive on 04 Dec 2018 Company Profile REC View profile » As well as making HiBob’s innovative technology available to the REC’s 3,500 members, the organisation is also adopting the platform itself to manage its own HR requirements. HiBob, which was founded just three years ago, has already won the business of more than 300 companies thanks to its unique combination of core HR capabilities and innovative benefits and engagement tools. The platform helps companies better understand their workforce, drive engagement, boost internal culture and improve retention. Neil Carberry, REC Chief Executive said: “ One of the core aims of the REC is to drive best practice in all areas of the industry, as well as helping recruitment firms address the challenges they face. With the fast paced nature of the industry there is no question that culture, retention and benefits are an area where we need collectively to do more and HiBob can play a significant role. “ One of the reasons we’ve adopted HiBob ourselves at the REC is that it will allow us to engage with our own teams and understand what they want and need in their roles, and making changes to ensure we remain one of the very best places to work. With recruitment known to be an intense profession, this is exactly the kind of approach the industry needs to take as a whole. ” HiBob is changing the way HR departments communicate with employees, and is moving the industry away from traditional task based systems to ones that put the person at the centre. The platform can tackle everything from retention challenges to employee satisfaction as well as replacing existing HR systems and processes. HiBob’s highly personalised interface - which meets the standard today’s workforce expects from technology - allows companies to capture what their employees want and need from every aspect of their role, from social experiences and perks all the way through to the full suite of financial benefits including pensions. It’s fast growing and agile, with people moving between roles very rapidly. With the industry valued at £32 billion, recruitment agencies need to be able to engage, manage and retain people as best they can. Fortunately HiBob offers a whole suite of tools and service that allow them to do exactly that. ” HiBob gives companies the ability to ‘map’ their employees and understand everything from the average commute time to overall company diversity. Office relationships may be rife in accountancy world but majority of accountants are calling for ban at work

03-December-2018 - onrec.com

Could this spell an end to antics at the office Christmas party? Posted in News archive on 03 Dec 2018 Company Profile Careers in Audit View profile » It’s officially the Christmas season and time for mince pies, Slade and Mariah Carey and perhaps even a cheeky kiss underneath the mistletoe at the office party.  However, the accountancy profession has some firm words; - romance may be rife amongst accountants in the workplace, yet the majority feel that a ban restricting certain relationships in the office should be enforced, according to the latest research published today by global job boards CareersinAudit.com and CareersinRisk.com. The research, which was recently conducted amongst 430 accountants, revealed that three quarters of accountants are aware of a co-worker, line manager or boss that has had a relationship with someone else within the office.  However, when asked if relationships should be banned in their workplace, two thirds of those surveyed believe some or all relationships should be completely banned; nearly half (47%) believe that certain relationships should not be allowed to cross the line into romance i.e. where people have a direct report or are working closely together,– whilst a further 17% believe there should never be any inter-office relationships. According to the research, seven in ten respondents’ companies do NOT have a current ban on office relationships, however a fifth reported whilst there is not an official ban at work, it is very much implied that such behaviour is not acceptable. When asked for personal views about office relationships, verbatim comments included “It is totally unprofessional to have relationships with colleagues at work and these will almost always give rise to conflicts of interests and bad office atmosphere. If that happens, one of the parties should leave the company/ department.” “Very unethical”; “Unprofessional”; “Nasty”; “This kind of relationship can alter the work perception and results” “it is risky business, decisions are influenced”. Simon Wright, Managing Partner, CareersinAudit.com comments: “Given the office is often a place where people frequently meet their future spouses, it seems rather draconian to ban all romantic relationships in the workplace. Particularly in large or medium-sized organisations where staff may never be working on the same projects or will barely see each other during the working day. “Of course, there is a risk of a professional conflict in smaller organisations and/or potential impact on results, no matter what size of the company, particularly if the relationship is turns bad or the couple break up. “Bosses, line managers and HR executives should be looking at ways to minimise the potential fall out and assess what measures can be put in place to ensure work is not jeopardised.  Employees should always be aware of their responsibilities and be transparent should a relationship start in the workplace.”

Results unveiled by Personal Group show that three quarters of employees don’t think their workplace offers enough mental health support Posted in News archive on 03 Dec 2018 Shocking new research released today by Personal Group , the technology-enabled employee services business, shows that despite a broader mainstream awareness of mental health, not enough support is given to employees suffering in the workplace. A startling 39% of those surveyed said their workplace does not offer any mental health support for employees, showing a disregard by employers for the rising issue of mental health support. And of all employees surveyed 66% felt their employer does not offer enough support for employee mental health.  This corporate apathy felt by employees arrives at a time when awareness of mental health issues in the UK is on the rise. 80% of respondents said they had noticed an overall increase in awareness of mental health generally in the UK, however a staggering 62% said they noticed no change in the levels of awareness in the workplace. There is also a growing appetite for education around mental health. Although 64% of employees believe they could provide support for someone struggling with a mental illness, more than half (58%) of employees would still like to be given mental health awareness training by their employer to develop their understanding and skills. Over half (60%) of respondents said they thought they would be able to notice the signs of someone suffering from a mental health problem; however, 36% said they were unsure. Rebekah Tapping, Group HR Director at Personal Group said: “It is surprising, not to mention a real shame, that such a large number of employees still feel there isn’t enough mental health support available in the workplace, especially surprising as the topic has significantly increased in awareness in recent years. It is more important than ever that business leaders and decision makers break the culture of stigma and silence around mental health and start making it a management priority and ensuring that a range of support is available for those who need it." The survey was conducted between the 28 th September to 19 th October 2018 and investigated issues ranging from the level of awareness of mental health wellbeing within the workplace and the current state of mental health support provided by employers for staff. There were 1,089 responses in total.  Interestingly, the survey was answered by more women than men, which may anecdotally highlight that women are much more comfortable talking about mental health issues than their male counterparts. However, more men than women wanted access to an employee helpline (28% vs 23%).  www.personalgroup.com

Latest jobs data: Demand for talent stalls as Brexit uncertainty continues

03-December-2018 - onrec.com

Professional recruitment firms reported that the number of candidates securing permanent roles in October 2018 increased by 5% year-on-year, according to new survey data from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies. Posted in News archive on 03 Dec 2018 Company Profile APSCo View profile » Vacancies for permanent professionals dips 4% Demand for contractors decreases 6% Contractors out on assignment down 10% Permanent placements up 5% Average salaries increase 1.5% Permanent hiring up Professional recruitment firms reported that the number of candidates securing permanent roles in October 2018 increased by 5% year-on-year, according to new survey data from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies ([ APSCo | http://www.apsco.org/] ). This overall strength can be firmly attributed to a significant 45% year-on-year increase in permanent placements within the IT sector. All other sectors recorded a dip in the number of professionals securing permanent roles. Within finance, for example, this decrease was negligible, with placements decreasing by 0.1%. Within the engineering and marketing sectors, however, these shifts were more significant, with vacancies slipping by 3% and 11% respectively.    Demand for talent stalls Despite relatively strong hiring activity in October 2018, demand for both permanent talent and contingent workers dipped year-on-year, which is indicative of a fall in confidence amongst employer organisations. Vacancies for contractors slipped by 6% in October 2018, while demand for permanent professionals dipped 4% during the same period. Despite this overall decline in demand, APSCo’s data does reveal pockets of positivity, most notably within the financial services sector, where vacancies for contractors rose by 17%.  Contract market remains slow While permanent placements increased 5% in the year to October 2018, the number of contractors out on assignment dipped by 10% during the same period. Use of contingent workers fell across every one of APSCo’s core sectors, with the exception of financial services where contractor levels increased by 8% year-on-year.   IT sector remains buoyant Hiring activity within the IT sector remained largely strong in October 2018. While the number of IT contractors out on assignment decreased by 24% year-on-year, this was more than counterbalanced by a strong uptick in the number of professionals securing permanent positions during the same period, with placements increasing by 45%. Meanwhile, demand for both permanent and contract professionals increased by 5%. This thirst for tech talent is reflected in recent reports which suggest that 94% of HR leaders report difficulties accessing the skills their organisation requires to support its digital transformation objectives.      Average salaries stable APSCo’s figures also reveal that median salaries across all professional sectors increased marginally in October 2018, rising by 1.5% across the board. Average salaries within accountancy and financial services jumped more significantly, rising by 3.8% and 2.8% respectively. Ann Swain, Chief Executive of APSCo comments: “It’s unsurprising that demand for talent has stalled given the current climate – and with government figures predicting that the UK economy will be significantly worse off under all possible Brexit scenarios, it may be some time before vacancy numbers begin to climb once again.” “The financial services sector is performing well at present, but the fact that hiring activity is concentrated within the contractor market is reflective of the short-term approach to staffing that businesses are taking amid Brexit uncertainty. Suggestions that     London could lose €800bn to Frankfurt by March 2019 as finance firms relocate will have done nothing to boost confidence - but the reality is that it is very difficult to predict what will happen to the market until future trading relations are confirmed.” John Nurthen, Staffing Industry Analysts’ Executive Director of Global Research commented: “In an uncertain economic environment, professional staffing firms have received fewer permanent and temp/contract vacancies from clients in October compared to a year ago. Surprisingly, the finance sector seems to be bucking this trend with 17% growth in temp/contract vacancies, however, this sector is bouncing back after a sharp decline in 2017 so the positive result is more of a market correction than a sign of real structured growth.”

Keep Christmas festive, not stress-tive, for workers

03-December-2018 - onrec.com

Christmas may be ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, but for workers, the festive period can mean longer hours, busier shifts and more pressure. Posted in News archive on 03 Dec 2018 December can leave workers feeling drained, unmotivated and unable to perform to the best of their abilities. This is bad news for the businesses that rely so heavily on keeping customers happy at this time of year. So, with Christmas around the corner, Erik Fjellborg, CEO and Founder of Quinyx , the market leader in workforce management, shares five top tips to ensure companies look after their elves this season. Don’t be a Grinch! “Our recent study, ‘’Work That Keeps the UK Working’’, found that more than 1 in 5 UK workers feel that their schedules don’t allow them to spend enough time with family, and a further 17% say their schedules mean they have to miss important family occasions. Christmas is all about spending time with those closest to you, and many workers will be counting down the hours left on their shifts before they can join their families and friends for the celebrations. At Quinyx, we know that happier employees are more productive ones. By giving workers the flexibility to pick and change their shifts over the festive period – so they don’t have to miss those all-important carol concerts or get-togethers – businesses can create a more motivated workforce.’’ Create realistic targets and incentives “Workers are often set increased targets over Christmas to handle and make the most of the busy period. But if these targets are unrealistic, morale can drop, and workers can feel set up to fail. If you are increasing your targets over Christmas, collaborate with workers to ensure that they are feasible, and plan to reward them with positive incentives if they succeed. These could include finishing work early, time in lieu, or a bonus.’’ Don’t allow for surprises “An unexpected gift under the tree is a far more welcome surprise than last minute calls in sick, or a family emergency. Meeting customer demand at Christmas can be difficult, but it is much harder if you are under-staffed. Consider creating a short-notice cover rota for the Christmas period, where staff can choose to be contacted if someone is needed to step in and lend a hand. For those that agree to be on the rota, ensure that you keep their contact details to hand so they can be contacted quickly and easily during a staffing emergency.’’ Split night-work evenly “As Christmas gets closer, many businesses turn to operating 24 hours a day in a bid to keep up with demand. Night shift work is increasing, and our research shows it grew by 31% between 2011 and 2017. However, it is important that the burden of extra overnight shifts is shared evenly among your workforce. I recommend double checking your scheduling to make sure no one becomes nocturnal in the run up to Christmas.” Keep an eye on awkward days “Christmas eve falls on a Monday this year, making it an awkward working day between the weekend and the Christmas bank holiday. This could mean workers are more tempted to move shifts in order to secure a clean sweep of time off. Acknowledge awkward days early and have honest conversations with staff about resourcing plans and expectations.” Quinyx’s Erik Fjellborg concluded: “Christmas is without a doubt the busiest time of year. The extra pressure can be stressful not only for workers, but also for those trying to schedule the right people to be in the right place at the right time. With your workers turning into Santa’s elves in December, helping everything run like clockwork and ensuring everyone has a fantastic time, it is only right we give them a festive season to look forward to, and look after their time as best we can.” www.quinyx.com
